The automotive industry is committed to growing the UK supply-chain as it seeks to adopt “local sourcing” of components for the seven volume car plants; eight commercial vehicle manufacturers; ten bus and coach makers and eight F1 teams based in the UK. KPMG expects the value of the automotive supply chain to grow by 95% to £21.5bn in 2016. The Automotive Council has identified £3 billion worth of contracts per year which UK based OEMs want to source from the UK. Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire is perfectly positioned to serve the needs of automotive suppliers.
Michelin, JCB, Johnson Controls, Pirelli, Magna and Zytek Automotive are all located within the area, whilst Bentley Motors, General Motors, MG Motors, BMW, Aston Martin and Toyota are all within an hour’s drive.
Jaguar Land Rover’s decision to locate its new Engine Manufacturing Centre at i54 South Staffordshire is set to add further stimulus to the local automotive supply-chain, manufacturing and R&D. It is the first time that JLR has designed and specified a British production facility. Manufacturing a family of all-new low-emission 4-cylinder Jaguar Land Rover petrol and diesel engines, the plant will supply the assembly plants just to the north and south of our area. JLR has placed its trust in the local workforce by investing more than £500 million in the site that will employ nearly 1,400 people.
