World Capital of Ceramics

Stoke-on-Trent is known all over the world as “The Potteries”. Our historic expertise in ceramics continues to thrive today, and we’re home to Waterford Wedgwood Royal Doulton; Portmeirion; Steelite International; Burleigh; Wade; Churchill; Endeka; Johnson Tiles; Dudson and Emma Bridgwater.

More than 300 companies employ over 7,000 people producing everything from cups and saucers to composite materials for dental and orthopaedic applications.

The ceramics industry is undergoing significant growth with new investment and increased local manufacturing. In a number of cases production has been repatriated back to The Potteries in recognition of the available skills, guarantee of quality and the importance of a “Made in England” marque.

Technical ceramics is a key growth sector supported by Keele University through its work on materials science, catalysis, photochemistry, medicinal chemistry; and Staffordshire University with their specialism in ceramic design.
